Hypergreen - Jacques Ferrier

The Hypergreen tower, designed by Jacques Ferrier for a competition in Paris, is a 250 meter / 60 storey tall mixed-use ‘green’ building [hence ‘hypergreen’]. The building’s structure emerges as an intricate concrete lattice system, wrapping the facade in the woven pattern and allowing for the floorplates to be nearly column free. This structural system also creates an interesting intermediate space between the building’s glazing, where Ferrier has apparently planned for some exterior gardens / greenery.

What makes the Hypergreen tower green, you ask [other than the name]? How about its:
geothermal heat pumps
photovoltaic panels
integrated wind turbines [seen at the top of the building]
earth cooling tubes
vegetated sky lobbies
a roof garden
rainwater recovery system
…and the aforementioned flexible / adaptable column-free floor plates.

ZeroHouse is a 650-square-foot prefabricated house designed to operate autonomously, with no need for utilities or waste connections. It generates its own electrical power from the high-efficiency solar panels and then stores it in a battery backup. Once completely charged, the home can run efficiently for a week without a hint of sunlight. It collects and stores rainwater, and processes all waste.ZeroHouse also collects water into a 2,700 gallon cistern, which then distributes it by the force of gravity as needed to other parts of the home. The house, fully air-conditioned and heated, is configured to comfortably support four adults with two bedrooms, a full bathroom, a kitchen/dining room, and a living room. In addition, two elevated exterior terraces and an outdoor shower extend the living spaces.

Conceived by architect Scott Specht, AIA, of Specht Harpman, zeroHouse can be used in remote or ecologically sensitive locations. It can be installed in places unsuitable for standard construction, including in water up to 10-feet deep or on slopes of up to 35 degrees. ZeroHouse employs a helical-anchor foundation system that touches the ground at only four points and disturbs the ground to a minimal degree. The tubular steel frame can withstand winds of up to 140 mph, and the living modules feature flexible attachment points to the frame to allow for deflection and movement without damage.The design and engineering work on the project was funded by a venture capital group with the intent of creating a start-up company to produce and market zeroHouse. Initial studies indicate that zeroHouse will sell for approximately $350,000.Pretty incredible little House!

Handpresso... i've been intrigued by this french contraption since i first laid eyes on it over at Acquire a few days ago (i haven't a clue why i've taken so long writing/editing this post bit by bit). And their ads crack me up ~ particularly the one with the french couple in a movie theater trying to be all suggestive while pumping up the expresso, getting the cups ready, etc. It's a beautiful contraption that looks like a nicely design mini bike pump you feed a packet of expresso (the premade type - pics below) and some hot water into for a perfectly brewed cup of expresso? I'm skeptical, but curious... see pics and videos after the jump as well as some of the accessories you can buy to go with.

Continuing our favorite topic of the month, another reader tips us off to another classic 20th century gas station by a famous architect: Mies Van Der Rohe's Esso gas station on Nun's Island from 1969.
We knew about this one, but were unable to find a photograph of it. Fortunately, zadcat from flickr has posted the photograph above. Extra bonus link provided by the zadcat: a survey of "ugly" gas stations in Montreal. You know where we stand on ugly (some of our favorite buildings are ugly!). And you know where we stand on Mies and drive-through culture (neon does wonders with all that glass!). So this is probably our favorite gas station ever. That is looks like the exterior is unmodified makes us love it even more, with that big awesome gas station sign out front.

“What is left to be invented when it comes to the creation of a landmark?
So far the 21st century – in a desperate effort to differentiate one building from the next – has been characterized by a manic production of extravagant shapes. Paradoxically, the result is a surprisingly monotonous urban substance, where any attempt at ‘difference’ is instantly neutralized in a sea of meaningless architectural gestures.
RAK is confronted with an important choice: Does it join so many others in this mad, futile race or does it become the first to offera new credibility?
This project represents a final attempt at distinction through architecture:not through the creation of the next bizarre image, butthrough a return to pure form.”

Pure form. Yes indeed. The immediate comparison is not, as I know you are all thinking, Boullee, nor is it the Deathstar. Sure at first glance, it may appear to be the planet destroying super structure of our dreams - it is big, it is round, it has craters. But as we all know the deathstar only had the one crater, the one from which the laser beams were focussed on Aldaraan with such pleasing results.
So if not the Deathstar or Boullee, then what?

Selon la presse angolaise, la zone choisie, d’une superficie de 187 km2, est située entre les municipalités de Cacuaco et Barra do Dande, à une cinquantaine de kilomètres au nord de l’actuelle capitale, Luanda. Le président José Eduardo Dos Santos a invité Oscar Niemeyer, l’un des bâtisseurs de Brasilia, la capitale brésilienne, à participer à ce projet. L’architecte brésilien s’est montré intéressé, mais il attend que toutes les informations lui soient communiquées concernant l’emplacement de la future cité angolaise.

the Minami-Nagano Dental Clinic & Residence by Japanese architect Hiroki Tanabe. A 274 square meter home + office combo for a dentist, the building is located in a suburb of Nagano, Japan -’in a beautiful farm village surrounded by rice fields and peach orchards’. this area of Japan the building code does not allow for the construction of any more free-standing residential projects - new housing must be combined [structurally] with ‘public’ functions. To achieve this, Tanabe created a folding ‘zig-zag’ roof-wall-floor plane out of 300mm thick reinforced concrete, which both combines the two functions of the building [home and dentist’s office] structurally, while separates them volumetrically.The three volumes he forms through this folding are a waiting area, the dentist’s office, and the dentist’s living space - each separated by a glass box that acts as a transitional zone between the various functions. This box gives occupants the impression of moving outside of the building [complete with glass ceiling] when moving between the different areas - further distinguishing between the different building uses.The interior of the building is a classic example of modern Japanese design. Clean, simple, and elegant shapes and lines - all white urethane resin paint - define the interior spaces, which was designed column free in order to leave the building flexible for different interior arrangements in the present or even different programs in the future.And, oh yeah - it apparently glows yellow at night, because it’s ill like that…

Architectes et scientifiques de l'Université de Stuttgart développent actuellement un concept innovant d'intégration à la fois performante et esthétique de capteurs solaires dans les façades vitrées de bâtiments de bureaux. Par rapport aux systèmes actuels, le nouveau concept doit permettre d'apporter des améliorations notables en termes d'isolation, de protection contre la lumière du jour et d'utilisation de l'énergie solaire

La façade "active" doit intégrer des capteurs solaires sous vide (du fabricant Schott-Rohrglas). Composés de séries de tubes transparents en verre, ces capteurs, disposés en peigne, sont multifonctionnels: source de chaleur (pour le chauffage des pièces et de l'eau sanitaire) ou de froid (refroidissement solaire), ils offrent une protection partielle contre le soleil (grâce aux propriétés réfléchissantes des tubes et l'évacuation de la chaleur), tout en laissant pénétrer la lumière du jour et tout en permettant à l'habitant de voir à travers.Les tubes doivent être disposés de manière optimale par rapport au rayonnement incident. Selon des mesures réalisées sur un prototype et des calculs de simulation, le rendement énergétique annuel de la façade active pourrait alors atteindre une valeur nette de 500 kWh par mètre carré (surface de la façade effectivement recouverte par des tubes absorbants) et une valeur brute de 340 kWh par mètre carré (surface totale de la façade), améliorant ainsi d'environ 35% les performances des façades recouvertes de collecteurs plans.Rappelons que le secteur des bâtiments est responsable de 45% de la consommation énergétique mondiale ce qui justifie les efforts de R&D, tels que celui engagé par l'Université de Stuttgart.

update: The crime data that post cites is from 2001 and the prison was finished in 2004, so there is no correlation really, but who knows, it is a damn attractive building - time might still prove him right! ;)

Véritable "traduction moderne" du Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica -cimetière vertical qui a vu le jour à Santos au Brésil en 1983- l'Architecte coréen Chanjoong Kim, a proposé pour la Biennale de Venise de 2006 sa vision de l'avenir des cimetières.Son projet, "The Last House", est une tour/cimetière de 110 mètres de haut.
On y retrouve le même esprit que pour le Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica mais son approche semble plus contemporaine grâce à un langage zoomorphique, le design du bâtiment étant inspiré du système vasculaire humain…
Il semblerait que le cimetière vertical soit particulièrement répandu au Brésil et commence à l'être de plus en plus dans d'autres endroits. Par exemple, le Panteón Memorial Towers complex. Constitué de 13 tours dans un style vaguement déconstructiviste, a récemment été présenté à Bogotá en Colombie.

OMA headquarters (Rem Koolhaas) bientôt à Bruxelles ?
L’architecte et urbaniste néerlandais Rem Koolhaas a reçu ce 2 février un titre de docteur Honoris Causa à l’université catholique de Leuven (KUL). Lors d’une interview sur la radio néerlandophone Klara, suite à cette cérémonie, il a déclaré qu’il pensait délocaliser le siège central de son agence, OMA (Office for metropolitan architecture), à Bruxelles.Fondé en 1975, OMA est actuellement basée à Rotterdam. Mais le professionnel estime qu’il y aurait un intérêt certain à s’installer dans la capitale de l’Europe. Sur les ondes, il a confirmé que son projet était « relativement concret » et qu’il avait toujours apprécié la Belgique. Rem Koolhaas n’est d’ailleurs pas un inconnu dans notre pays, puisque, en 2000, il avait déjà réalisé une étude sur l’image de Bruxelles en tant que capitale de l’Union.

The two bunkers are additions made in 1936 to the nineteenth century New Dutch Water line of defense; an 85km long protective garland of military objects combined with an intricate water management system which enabled the inundation of land in case of attack. For a number of years they have formed part of an estate that is slowly being developed as a mixture of high-end business and sporting facilities. Stables and polo fields form the core of the estate. The structure on top of the first bunker is intended as a business retreat. It consists of a single, large room with some elementary facilities. The seamless, stainless steel façade is orientated towards the polo field with its single window. A glass skylight enforces the smooth, car-like appearance of the structure. TEXT UNSTUDIO

Designed by Johnston Marklee for an irregular hillside lot in Los Angeles, the single family residence is shaped by the desire to maximize the allowable volume permitted by the zoning code, whilst minimizing the amount of foundations and subsequent footprint of the house. The resulting structure adopts a site specific form yet optimizing the building’s occupation on the inclined lot.

Gehry, Nouvel, Ando, Hadid build in Abu Dhabi

Architects Frank Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Tadao Ando (above) and Zaha Hadid have designed cultural buildings for Saadiyat Island, which lies just off the shore of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
With four leading international architects designing buildings, the project will create one of the world’s most prestigious cultural centres - and the first in the Arab world.

Gehry is designing a Guggenheim contemporary art museum (above), which will be the first of its kind in the Middle East.

Hadid is designing Saadiyat’s Performing Arts Centre (above), Nouvel is designing a Classical Arts Museum (below).

Ando is designing a Maritime Museum, which is shown at the top of the page and below.
The four buildings have been commissioned by Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Development & Investment Company.
“The aim of Saadiyat Island must be to create a cultural asset for the world; a gateway and beacon for cultural experience and exchange,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the crown prince of the United Arab Emirates and chair of the development’s executive council. “Culture crosses all boundaries and therefore Saadiyat will belong to the people of the UAE, the greater Middle East and the world at large.”
The Sheikh also announced an international architecture competition for the Sheikh Zayed National Museum on Saadiyat Island, which will be devoted to the history and traditions of Abu Dhabi.
